The Kahului business was issued a red placard eight days ago for a variety of critical violations. It was allowed to reopen this week after a follow up inspection. The establishment in question is Paradise Supermart Fast Food and Catering.

The saga started when a complaint prompted an inspection. The Maui Food Safety Branch issued Paradise Supermart Fast Food and Catering a red placard when a complaint spurred an inspection. According to a Department of Health news release, those violations included improper temperatures in refrigeration, a lack of managerial control of food safety requirements, grease build up, unsanitary conditions, and handwashing sinks that were not accessible and in need of repair, among other issues. A followup inspection was conducted on Nov. 22.

After initial corrective measures were taken, the establishment received conditional approval to continue operations. Five days later, the Department of Health announced that the company had received a conditional pass to reopen to the public, and a second follow-up inspection would be held the next day. When inspectors returned to the facility on Nov. 22, they found a few issues first identified on Nov. 21 remained. Those included food safety issues like refrigeration that didn’t hold temperatures and needed to be emptied, grease and debris needed to be cleaned up, and entry points for pests needed to be repaired. Another follow-up visit was scheduled on Nov. 28, according to a news release from the Department of Health.

Further progress towards compliance was noted during subsequent inspections. According to inspection reports, in the Nov. 22 inspection health inspectors found that debris removal had begun and that iced seafood was being covered in more ice, which the operators would need to continue to monitor. The hand washing sink was repaired, but still drained slowly. They were allowed to reopen with a yellow placard in place in the front entrance. The owner of Paradise Supermart Fast Food and Catering is Paradise Asian Foods.

The Nov. 28 inspection noted that all critical violations from previous inspections have been corrected, and that the complaint was abated. There is still one non-critical violation that must be addressed, and employees will have to monitor food to minimize pest entry, according to the inspection report summary from the Department of Health, dated Nov. 28. The business was given a green placard and allowed to reopen.
